All About the Poker Room

A poker room is quite simply the place you go to to play poker. There are stand alone poker rooms, for which poker is the primary focus, and there are poker rooms found within larger casinos. Here's what you should know about the different types of poker rooms and What Is The Best Poker Room

A live poker room, one that exists physically, and not just on the Internet, is often referred to as a "Brick and Mortar" or "B&M Poker Room." Most of these rooms are found within a larger casino, as in "the poker room at Bally's" or "the poker room at Bellagio." However, California in particular has many famous stand alone poker rooms, since the California courts have ruled that poker is a game of skill and therefore not subject to the state's anti-gambling statutes. If you are familiar with a brick and mortar poker room but not familiar with online texas holdem strategy, I have found this article to be a good introduction.

  1. The Stand Alone Poker Room
  2. The advantage to some of these California poker rooms is that they are designed to cater to the poker player. While these casinos now have separate rooms for other games such as variations of blackjack, they are mostly in the business of poker. Poker is not a big money maker for larger casinos, as they only make money by taking a percentage of each pot ("the rake") and not by beating the players, as in the other casino games. Therefore, the larger casinos tend not to give poker players the same kind of service and attention as the players of the other games. In contrast, the stand alone poker rooms are primarily about poker, so as a poker player, you will get the full attention of the staff. These rooms also tend to have the widest variety of games and tournaments.

The disadvantage to these poker rooms is that they also tend to attract the best players. Since these poker rooms often exist solely as poker rooms and not in the context of a larger hotel, casino, and/or tourist destination, they tend to attract people whose main interest is in playing poker, and in winning. While it is certainly possible to get a good game at one of these poker rooms and to win, you may be facing tougher competition than in a traditional casino. (Take note: Though these rooms focus primarily on poker, they are also referred to as "casinos.")

  3. The Casino Poker Room
  4. In contrast, you may find easier opposition at a traditional casino, such as the ones found in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. While there are certainly pros at these venues, there are also many players who see poker as just another gambling game like blackjack or craps, and don't recognize the skill element involved. You will also find more players looking to play just for fun, who are not as concerned about the money involved, and players who are drunk or tired, all of which can give you an advantage. Surprisingly, for years, most major casinos did not even have a poker room, or had one that was so small it could hardly even be called a poker room. With the recent boom in poker's popularity, nearly every casino in Las Vegas or Atlantic City now has some kind of poker room. However as was mentioned earlier, you are not likely to get the kind of frequent food and drink service or personal attention that other casino players, who are earning more for the casino, will get.

If you are looking for a total poker experience at a large casino, you will want to locate the casinos that pride themselves on attention to poker players. These include the Borgata and Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, and the Bellago, the Venetian, and the Mirage in Las Vegas. These casinos have used poker as a promotion for years, and offer top of the line service for the poker player. If you are just looking to try your hand at the game at reasonable limits with reasonable.
